Secret Ingredient Shepard's Pie

We love a good beefy marinara over here, but I always seem to have an awkward amount left over after a day or two. My favorite shepherd’s pie calls for tomato paste, so I decided to sub in a little extra marinara and see what happened. And what happened was magic. This shepherd’s pie is the perfect easy weeknight meal, coming together in just a few short steps. I recommend doubling your next batch of mashed potatoes and freezing half to have on hand the next time you want to make this!
- Prep Time:
- Cook Time:
- Servings: 4-6
Ingredients
- Ground Beef, 1 lb pkg
- (1 lb.) Ground Pork
- (1 C.) Red meat sauce (leftover pasta sauce/marinara works great!)
- (4 cloves) Garlic
- (1) Onion (diced)
- (Optional) Vegetables of your choice (peas, carrots, green beans)
- (Optional) Rosemary (to taste)
- (3 Tsp.) Flour
- (1/3 C.) Good Red Wine
- (4-6 Cups) Mashed Potatoes (listen to your heart)
- (Optional) Shredded cheese for the top (we like parmesan and sharp white cheddar)
Directions
- Cook your ground meat, drain fat if necessary. Add flour and stir to coat meat.
- Add all ingredients EXCEPT mashed potatoes to meat and heat up.
- Grease a deep oven pan and add meat mixture. Top with mashed potatoes
- Cook at 375 degrees until bubbly and mashed potatoes are getting toasty and brown (30-45 min.)
- Last 5-10 minutes of cooking, top with cheese if desired.
HINT: Cook all your ingredients in a large cast iron skillet, then top with mashed potatoes and put skillet in oven to bake! One Pan Wonder!
